Submissions to Scum are open the first week (from the 1st to the 7th) of every month. The rest of the month, submissions are closed.
Scum is interested in publishing feminist-friendly work of any variety, but as a general rule your piece should be under 1000 words (50 lines for poetry) and able to be classified as “fiction”, “rant”, “memoir”, “column”, “poetry”, and/or “review”. We tend not to publish traditional reviews of books and films—to get a feel for the reviews we publish, check the review tag. Feel free to pitch to us if you’re not sure if your piece is a good fit. Obviously the best way to find out the kind of work we publish is to read what’s already on our site, but maybe you’ve written something great that you haven’t seen on Scum before and that’s cool as well.
Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Send your work as a word document (not in the body of the email, please!) and make sure you include the type of submission (fiction/memoir/rant/poetry/column/review) in the subject line. We also accept artwork submissions, so if you’re an artist, get in touch. We try to get back to everyone as soon we can, but remember we only have a staff of four dumb-dumbs so please be patient and kind.
PS. Unfortunately for everyone Scum is a revenue-free operation, so we cannot pay you for your submission. It sucks, we know.
